Northern Telecom - Compact 616 & Modular

Manufacturer: Northern Telecom
Model: Compact 616 & Modular
Software Version: Design Release 3 (DR3) or higher recommended. DR2 does not provide busy forward to VoiceTrak. Verified on 616 DR5.

Hardware Requirements: VMI card for each 2 VoiceTrak ports.
Note: Street price about $600 to $700 per VMI.

VoiceTrak Parameter Settings:

Custom Pg. 1 Hold &,*70

Custom Pg. 2 Message Light On &,*1E

Custom Pg. 2 Message Light Off &,#1E

Custom Pg. 2 Grunt 1

Custom Pg. 2 Threshold Grunt 9000

Custom Pg. 2 Fixed/Var Box 1

Important: All other VoiceTrak parameters must be set to Default.

Use Tone/Cadence file: NSTAR616.NT (Also available - NSTAR824.NT)

Notes:

The VMI card necessary to provide full integration is expensive. But VMI cards and VoiceTrak are so much less expensive than the Startalk that you could have enough money left over to buy a solid used car.

Transfer to fax machine. The NSTAR616.NT tone table includes incoming fax detection. You may add an "X" type mailbox which transfers to a fax machine. Also add a line to the VOICE.BAT file which says: 'SET FAX_BOX=xxx' where xxx is mailbox for the fax machine. Not all fax machines send good CNG tones and will not transfer, but if fax tones are detected, the call will transfer to the extension specified in the FAX_BOX setting.

VoiceTrak Mailbox Types. All mailboxes should be N type for no monitoring during call transfers.

Salutation (S) Boxes. An "S" box must be created for each voice mail port extension number. The mailbox number must match the vm port extension number and the extension field must be left blank.

Norstar Programming

Refer to the Norstar voice mail interface installation guide for complete Norstar programming instructions.

Translation Code Table: This table is the heart of the integration information. Note that with Northern Telecom, LINK refers to a hookflash. In VoiceTrak this is signified by: "&,".

Link * 1   Send Message Code (Message Light On)
Link # 1  Cancel Message Code (Message Light Off)
Link *70 Transfer Code (Transfer call from VoiceTrak to a station)
#       Prefix Code (Send forwarded caller to personal greeting)
##### Disconnect Code (Norstar tells VoiceTrak caller has disconnected)

The Send, Cancel and Transfer settings listed are the default values and we see no need to make a change. The Prefix and Disconnect codes are initially blank and must be entered.

No Page Zone
No Auxiliary Ringer
No Hotline

Yes Line Pool Access (Required to call pagers, etc.)   Two intercom lines are assigned with one intercom line assigned as the prime line.

If the VMI is Connected to Centrex:

Insure each telephone port is configured so that DN type is 'Norstar Only'

Hunt Groups:

(Note: Norstar Compact software version DR 2 can't CFNA. Upgrade to DR3 or higher.)
To create a voice mail hunt group it is necessary to call forward each VoiceTrak port to the next VoiceTrak port. There is no combined Busy / No Answer setting, so you must program both Busy Forward and No Answer Forward on EACH VoiceTrak port. The last VoiceTrak port should forward back to the first VoiceTrak port.

For example, assume VoiceTrak is assigned to stations 221 to 224. Assign VMI DN 1 to CFNA to 222. Assign VMI DN2 to CFNA to 223; VMI DN3 to CFNA to 224; VMI DN4 to CFNA to 221.

REPEAT this process for call forward - busy (CFB) on all VoiceTrak ports.

Forward To VoiceTrak From Station: Stations can forward to VoiceTrak on a Busy / No Answer condition. You must assign CFNA and CFB to the lead VoiceTrak port (VMI DN1) for all stations.

Automated Attendant: If VoiceTrak is used for automated attendant, assign lines as required to the first VMI DN.

Supervised Transfers: The advanced capabilities of the Norstar eliminate the need for supervised transfers.

VoiceTrak Zone Paging Feature: The Norstar does not allow VMI units to initiate a page at this time. Therefore, the VoiceTrak zone paging feature is not available.

Operation

All important functions are handled well.

Trailing Digits / Follow-on ID: The most important voice mail integration feature is included. Calls can be transferred to a station, and on a no-answer or busy condition, the caller will forward to the appropriate personal greeting.

Disconnect Norstar has a great disconnect feature. The # sign repeated five times will clear the port from anywhere in the VoiceTrak system.

Message Lights The display indicates that a message is waiting.
